At 2,205 metres, the Piton Maïdo belvedere delivers the island's most theatrical panorama: the entire Cirque de Mafate laid out 1,600 m below, framed by ocean on three horizons. A private pre-dawn drive times your arrival to catch the Indian Ocean sunrise ignite the ramparts in gold.
What to expect
Your guide collects you at Pointe des Galets in darkness and winds up through sugar-cane lowlands and then cloud forest, arriving at the summit as the first light bleeds across the horizon. The caldera of Mafate materialises slowly from the mist below — a living topographic map of impossibly steep ridges and tiny hamlet lights. You walk the short summit trail, photograph at leisure, and descend via the Forêt de Bébour — a primeval cloud forest threaded with giant tree ferns. Back at the port by mid-morning.
Good to know
Half-day (4–5 hours). Depart port by 5:00–5:30 am for optimal sunrise. Temperatures at the summit can be 10–12°C — bring a warm layer. The road is serpentine; those prone to motion sickness should take precautions. Pre-book 1–2 weeks ahead.
