Witness one of nature's most surreal palettes — a bubblegum-pink lake whose salinity rivals the Dead Sea — on a private full-day excursion to Lac Rose. Swim in the hyper-saline waters, meet salt harvesters, and explore a Serer fishing village.
What to expect
Your air-conditioned private vehicle collects you at the cruise terminal and heads northeast along the Dakar Peninsula, passing through traditional Lebou fishing villages en route (approx. 45 minutes). At the lake, your guide introduces you to the Serer salt workers who wade chest-deep, their skin coated in shea butter as protection. You can float in the extraordinary saline water yourself — a weightless, otherworldly experience. A freshwater rinse, a traditional lunch of thiéboudienne (Senegalese fish rice) at a lakeside restaurant, and a short walk through the adjacent Serer village complete the day.
Good to know
Full-day excursion — confirm your ship's all-aboard time and allow at least 90 minutes for the return drive. The lake's pinkest hues appear in dry season (November–June) when salinity peaks. Bring a swimsuit, sunscreen, and sandals you don't mind getting salty. Do not wear jewellery into the water — high salinity is corrosive.
