Glide silently through the UNESCO Saloum Delta's labyrinthine mangrove channels aboard a traditional wooden pirogue, spotting flamingos, pelicans, and dolphins, then step ashore to walk among the delta's ancient, cathedral-like baobab forests.
What to expect
Transfer by private vehicle south from Dakar (approx. 2 hours) to the delta embarkation point, where your hand-crafted wooden pirogue and expert naturalist await. The two-hour cruise weaves through channels flanked by ancient mangrove roots, with sightings of pink-backed pelicans, African spoonbills, and — if the season favours — bottlenose dolphins riding the bow. You step ashore on a shell-mound island (created over millennia by the Serer people) for a guided walk among giant baobabs, some over 800 years old. A fresh seafood lunch at a riverside eco-lodge precedes the return journey.
Good to know
This is a full-day excursion (approx. 8 hours including transfers). It is best suited to ships with a late afternoon all-aboard. Confirm departure time with your operator. Bring binoculars, insect repellent, a sun hat, and a light layer for the pirogue. Wildlife sightings are most abundant November–April. Advance booking is essential.
