Trek through the surreal Valley of Desolation to the world's second-largest boiling lake — a steaming, bubbling cauldron inside a live volcanic crater. This is Dominica's ultimate bucket-list challenge, raw and utterly unforgettable.
What to expect
The full-day hike (6–7 hrs round-trip) takes you through cloud forest, past sulphurous vents and colour-streaked volcanic rock, into a landscape that feels like another planet. Your guide handles all navigation through the Morne Trois Pitons National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — narrating the geology and ecology as you go. Reaching the churning grey-blue cauldron of the Boiling Lake is a profound, almost disorienting moment. The descent rewards you with river crossings and lush rainforest views.
Good to know
This is a strenuous, full-day hike — sturdy hiking boots, moisture-wicking layers, and significant fitness are essential. Depart by 7 am to comfortably return before your all-aboard. Pre-book well in advance as certified guide slots are limited. Bring at least 2 litres of water and lunch.
