Glide silently by rowboat through Dominica's hauntingly beautiful Indian River — a 'Pirates of the Caribbean' filming location — then explore the ruins of 18th-century Fort Shirley above Portsmouth Bay. History, cinema, and nature collide in one extraordinary half-day.
What to expect
Your guide rows you beneath an interlocking canopy of bloodwood and bwa mang mangroves, the water so still it mirrors the jungle above. Scarlet macaws, herons, and iguanas appear as you drift deeper into the primordial green silence — the same scenes that captivated the Pirates of the Caribbean production team. A riverside 'bush bar' stop midway offers local rum punch in the heart of the forest. From Portsmouth, a short drive takes you up to Cabrits National Park, where Fort Shirley's dramatically ruined stone barracks, cannon batteries, and officers' quarters command sweeping views over Prince Rupert Bay — one of the Caribbean's finest natural harbours.
Good to know
Indian River tours depart from Portsmouth, approx. 1 hr north of Roseau — cruise ships calling at Portsmouth Pier make this very convenient. If your ship docks in Roseau, arrange private transport in advance. The river guide fee is paid directly to your licensed local guide at the river landing; agree the fee before departure. A half-day combination leaves ample time before all-aboard.
