Snorkel through volcanic bubbles rising from the ocean floor at Champagne Reef — the Caribbean's most extraordinary underwater experience — then round the dramatic Scotts Head peninsula where Atlantic meets Caribbean in a cathedral of coral and colour.
What to expect
The boat skirts Dominica's lush, cliff-edged southwest coast to anchor above the Champagne Reef, a geothermal vent system where warm carbonated bubbles stream continuously from the volcanic seabed — snorkelling here feels like floating inside a glass of champagne, surrounded by parrotfish, angelfish, and black coral. The guide then navigates to Scotts Head, the dramatic spit where the Caribbean and Atlantic meet, for a second snorkel in current-swept waters teeming with pelagic life and hard corals. Visibility regularly exceeds 30 metres. The boat ride itself, hugging Dominica's impossibly green volcanic coastline, is a scenic highlight in its own right.
Good to know
Equipment (mask, fins, snorkel, life vest) is provided. A wetsuit or rash guard is recommended as the geothermal areas can be warm but the Scotts Head pass has cooler currents. Tours run approximately 3 hours and depart from Roseau. Book directly with PH Whale Watch; morning slots have the calmest seas and best light for underwater visibility. Non-swimmers can enjoy the boat ride and surface views.
