Cross the sea to the Isle of Mull and onward to Iona — the cradle of Scottish Christianity — where a 6th-century abbey rises from an emerald island that has drawn pilgrims for 1,500 years.
What to expect
The ferry crossing from Oban to Craignure on Mull frames stunning views of Duart Castle perched on a headland above the Sound of Mull. A connecting coach traverses Mull's single-track roads through wild moorland to Fionnphort, where a short ferry hop delivers you to Iona. The abbey — burial place of early Scottish kings — is extraordinarily moving in its simplicity. White beaches of pure shell-sand, a turquoise sea, and the utter quiet of the island make this feel like a place outside ordinary time.
Good to know
This is a full-day excursion — critically check your all-aboard time before committing. The Oban–Mull ferry takes approximately 45 minutes; many cruise lines offer this as a guided option for timing peace of mind, but independent travel is entirely feasible if you plan the timetable carefully. Pre-book all ferry legs on the CalMac website. Depart the pier early (first sailing advisable).
