Walk 15 minutes north along the shoreline to Dunollie, seat of the MacDougall clan for over 1,000 years, where a ruined clifftop keep commands sweeping views over Oban Bay and the Hebridean islands beyond.
What to expect
The shoreside path to Dunollie is itself a pleasure — a gentle walk past crashing waves with views of Kerrera island. The ruined keep dates to the 12th century and sits dramatically above the bay; climb its grassy slopes for one of the finest panoramas in the Western Highlands. The adjacent House of the MacDougalls is a beautifully curated museum housing the Brooch of Lorn — a Jacobite treasure of immense historical significance — and artefacts spanning a millennium of Highland life. Knowledgeable staff bring the stories alive with warmth and depth.
Good to know
A 15-minute scenic walk from the pier makes this perfectly self-guided. Allow 1.5–2 hours for the full grounds and museum. Open seasonally — check ahead for hours. Combine with a stroll along the Esplanade and a stop at McCaig's Tower (free, 10-minute walk uphill from town) for a full morning of Oban's finest sights.
