Ride the only mountain railway in the British Isles to the 621-metre summit of Snaefell, where — on a clear day — you can see England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales simultaneously. A Victorian engineering marvel and a truly once-in-a-lifetime panorama.
What to expect
Board the Manx Electric Railway at Derby Castle in Douglas and travel along the dramatic eastern coastline to the village of Laxey, home of the world-famous Great Laxey Wheel. There you transfer to the century-old Snaefell Mountain Railway tram, which climbs through open heather moorland to the cloud-kissed summit. The mountaintop café and viewing platform are yours to enjoy before the gentle descent. The entire journey from Douglas and back takes approximately three to four hours.
Good to know
Operates seasonally (typically May–September); check the timetable and pre-purchase tickets online to avoid queues at Laxey. Allow at least 3.5 hours from Douglas. Wear layers — the summit can be 10°C cooler than the town.
