Travel the length of the Isle of Man aboard one of the world's oldest operating narrow-gauge steam railways — Victorian locomotives, original teak carriages, and a line that winds through unspoiled countryside to the medieval market town of Castletown. A bucket-list ride for lovers of golden-age travel.
What to expect
Steam out of Douglas Station aboard a locomotive that has been pulling this very route since the Victorian era, the whistle echoing across the Southern Uplands. The line passes through Port Soderick's wooded glen, agricultural heartland, and arrives at Castletown — the island's ancient capital — where Castle Rushen, one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Europe, awaits. Disembark, explore, and return at leisure on the next service. The experience is as much about the journey as the destination.
Good to know
Douglas Station is a five-minute walk from the Sea Terminal. Pre-purchase tickets online or at the station. Services run roughly every 90 minutes; plan the return leg carefully against your all-aboard time. Castle Rushen entry (Manx National Heritage) is an additional GBP 7.50.
