Step inside Fishguard Town Hall to encounter the extraordinary 'Last Invasion of Britain' Tapestry — 30 metres of hand-stitched storytelling depicting the astonishing 1797 French landing at Fishguard. Arrange a private guided interpretation for full historic immersion.
What to expect
The tapestry unfolds the remarkable, almost comical story of the last invasion of British soil — when a French force of 1,400 landed at Carreg Wastad Point in February 1797, only to surrender to a local Welsh militia within two days. Each panel is exquisitely stitched with detail and dry Welsh humour. A knowledgeable local guide brings the characters to vivid life, including the legendary Jemima Nicholas — 'the Welsh Heroine' who reportedly single-handedly captured twelve French soldiers with a pitchfork. The gallery is intimate, unhurried, and profoundly moving as a piece of community art and national history.
