Visit Castell Henllys, Wales's only reconstructed Iron Age hillfort built on its original site, for an extraordinary step 2,000 years into Celtic Pembrokeshire. Roundhouses, ramparts, and expert storytellers make this utterly unlike any museum.
What to expect
Set in a wooded valley 20 minutes from Fishguard, Castell Henllys is where the Demetae Celtic tribe lived for centuries before the Roman conquest. Four full-scale thatched roundhouses stand exactly where archaeology placed them, furnished as they would have been in the Iron Age. Expert costumed interpreters demonstrate grain-grinding, weaving, and iron-smelting, and the atmosphere — birdsong, wood smoke, ancient earthworks — is profoundly immersive. The surrounding woodland trail, with its ancient trees and bank-and-ditch defences, is one of the most atmospheric walks in Wales.
Good to know
A taxi or hire car from Fishguard Harbour takes approximately 20 minutes. Pre-book a guided interpretation session directly with the site for the richest experience. Allow 2–2.5 hours on site. Excellent for travellers with any interest in Celtic history, archaeology, or mythology.
