Fly from Talkeetna in a ski-equipped bush plane, soar past Denali's 20,310-ft summit, and land on a high-altitude glacier at the roof of North America. Few experiences on Earth rival the silence and scale of this moment.
What to expect
The drive or rail ride from Anchorage to Talkeetna (2 hrs) is itself scenic, winding through the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. From Talkeetna, a ski-plane climbs through the Alaska Range, weaving between Foraker and Hunter before landing on the Kahiltna or Ruth Glacier. You step out onto ancient ice in profound stillness, surrounded by 14,000-ft walls of granite and snow. Return routing offers a close pass of Denali's summit.
Good to know
Flights are weather-dependent — Talkeetna Air Taxi will reschedule if visibility is poor. Allow a full day (8–10 hrs from Anchorage). Pre-book directly; glacier landing tours are their most in-demand product. Dress for sub-freezing temperatures at altitude even in summer. Talkeetna is ~115 miles north of Anchorage.
