Set out on one of America's most beautiful and historic roads — the Natchez Trace Parkway — tracing the ancient path used by Indigenous peoples, Kaintuck boatmen, and Civil War soldiers. Serene, billboard-free, and breathtaking, it's a living corridor of Southern natural and cultural history.
What to expect
The Trace begins just minutes from the Natchez waterfront and immediately transports you into a canopied tunnel of ancient hardwoods and rolling Mississippi hills. Stop at the iconic Emerald Mound — the second-largest pre-Columbian ceremonial mound in North America — and walk its grassy summit for panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Continue to the Windsor Ruins overlook (nearby) or linger at one of the designated hiking trails for old-growth forest walks with almost no other visitors. The road itself is a sensory delight: no trucks, no billboards, no stoplights — just birdsong and history.
Good to know
A private car or hired driver (arranged through visitnatchez.org or your hotel concierge) is strongly recommended for maximum flexibility and comfort. The Trace entrance is approximately 5 minutes from downtown Natchez. Allow 3–4 hours; Emerald Mound is about 11 miles north and is the essential first stop.
