Board the only surviving American Civil War river ironclad in existence — the USS Cairo, raised from the Yazoo River after a century underwater — for an extraordinary encounter with 1862 naval warfare inside Vicksburg National Military Park.
What to expect
The preserved hull of the Cairo sits under a purpose-built shelter within the military park, its iron plating, gun ports, and boiler machinery exposed for close inspection. The adjacent museum displays over 7,000 artifacts recovered from the riverbed — sailors' personal effects, mess equipment, ammunition, and uniforms — creating an astonishingly intimate portrait of life aboard a Union warship. Rangers offer interpretive talks throughout the day, and the setting amid the park's rolling bluffs is genuinely dramatic. Plan 60–90 minutes to appreciate both the vessel and the museum fully.
