Ride the world's oldest transporter bridge — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — across the Nervión estuary, then retreat to a hillside Txakoli bodega for a private tasting of the Basque Country's electric, mineral white wine poured with theatrical flair.
What to expect
Built in 1893, the Vizcaya Bridge at Portugalete is an engineering marvel: a gondola suspended from a high iron lattice carries cars and pedestrians across the estuary in 90 seconds. You can also walk the soaring high catwalk for extraordinary views of the Basque coastline and Bilbao's industrial heritage. From there, a short drive into the green hills of Getxo brings you to a boutique Txakoli estate, where the winemaker demonstrates the traditional high-pour technique that aerates the wine into a sparkling, tangy sip — the definitive Basque aperitif. Pair with pintxos on the estate terrace.
Good to know
The Vizcaya Bridge is in Portugalete, 12 km from central Bilbao — take a taxi or the Metro Line 1 to Areeta (20 min). Combine both stops in a relaxed half-day (3–4 hrs), leaving time for the Guggenheim or Casco Viejo in the afternoon. The catwalk is not suitable for guests with vertigo.
