Stand before the world's most extraordinary embroidered chronicle — 70 metres of 11th-century linen depicting the Norman Conquest — then wander Bayeux's perfectly preserved medieval cathedral city on a private guided tour.
What to expect
The drive east from Cherbourg through the Cotentin peninsula takes about 75 minutes, arriving at the Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux before the coach groups arrive. Your guide decodes each of the 58 scenes in the Tapestry, from Harold's oath to the Battle of Hastings, revealing the visual jokes and coded messages that most visitors miss entirely. From the museum you walk minutes to the soaring Gothic Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Bayeux — remarkably intact and achingly beautiful. Lunch at a traditional Norman brasserie (own account) is followed by a stroll through Bayeux's half-timbered old town before the return drive.
Good to know
Bayeux Tapestry Museum entry: EUR 14.50 adult (book direct at bayeuxmuseum.com). Full tour is 6–7 hours; depart by 09:00 to return comfortably before all-aboard.
