Strike out on the legendary Viking Trail coastal path — a sequence of headland and bog hikes revealing the most spectacular seascapes in Atlantic Canada, framed by wild orchids, caribou tracks, and the same horizon the Norse navigators first glimpsed.
What to expect
From the NHS trailhead, a network of well-maintained paths fans out across coastal headlands and sphagnum bogs, delivering panoramic views of Épaves Bay and the Strait of Belle Isle — the same waters Leif Ericson crossed circa 1000 AD. The Boney Shore Trail winds along dramatic sea cliffs where bald eagles and gannets ride thermals overhead. In season, the bogs blaze with rare bog orchids, pitcher plants (Newfoundland's provincial flower), and Labrador tea. Trails range from 1 km to 8 km return — choose your own adventure.
Good to know
Waterproof, ankle-supporting footwear is essential — bog sections are perpetually wet. For a guided naturalist experience, contact Valhalla Lodge (valhalla-lodge.com) in advance, as they arrange local expert hikes in the area. Trails are accessible directly from the NHS site, so no extra transport is needed. Allow 2–3 hours for the full coastal loop.
