Hike one of Europe's longest and most spectacular gorges — 16 km of towering limestone walls, ancient kri-kri ibex, wildflower meadows, and the legendary Iron Gates narrows that close to just 3 metres wide. A physical adventure with mythic scenery.
What to expect
Transfer by coach to the Omalos plateau (1,230 m altitude) at dawn, where the cool mountain air and silence are immediately arresting. The trail descends steadily through ancient cypress forests before entering the gorge proper. At the legendary Iron Gates, sheer rock faces close around you in near-darkness. Emerge at the Libyan Sea village of Agia Roumeli for a well-earned swim and a plate of fresh grilled fish before the ferry to Sfakia. The pace is comfortable but the full route is 16 km — this is an active adventure.
Good to know
The gorge is open May–October (weather dependent). Allow 5–7 hours for the full trek; this is a full-day excursion departing 06:30 from Chania. Sturdy closed-toe walking shoes (not sandals) are mandatory — the trail is rocky. Maximum comfort requires trekking poles. Calling at Chania port is ideal; confirm all-aboard is no earlier than 20:00.
