Cross the causeway to a medieval Byzantine fortress-town marooned on a sea rock — car-free, honey-stoned, and barely changed since the 13th century. One of Greece's most intoxicating hidden treasures.
What to expect
The 90-minute drive east along the Laconian coast is itself scenic, tracing olive groves and Byzantine chapels. At Monemvasia you pass through the single narrow gate into the lower town: bougainvillea-draped lanes, Venetian mansions, and the magnificent domed Cathedral of Christ in Chains. Your guide leads you up to the haunting upper acropolis — roofless Byzantine churches and Venetian ramparts with a 360° sea panorama. Optional lunch at a renowned castle-town restaurant rounds off the morning.
Good to know
Allow 6 hours minimum; flat shoes are essential — the upper town path is steep loose stone. Pre-book private tour; the Monemvasia causeway road can be busy in high summer. Confirm all-aboard time with ship before booking a full-day version.
