Climb — or drive — to the Venetian fortress that crowns Nafplio's skyline at 216 m, with sweeping views over the gulf, the old town, and the sea castle of Bourtzi. An icon of the Greek War of Independence and one of the finest baroque military complexes in the Mediterranean.
What to expect
The legendary 999 steps (a stiff 20-minute climb) reward you with a fortress sprawling across eight linked bastions, each with its own courtyard and cannon embrasures. Photography is extraordinary — the sweep from the highest bastion takes in the entire Argolic Gulf, the old town's terracotta rooftops, and Bourtzi sitting jewel-like in the water below. The fortress itself held a pivotal role in the 1821 revolution, and the solitary cell of the hero Kolokotronis is still intact. Sunset visit in summer is particularly magical.
Good to know
The fortress is a 10-minute walk from the port, or take a taxi to the top gate to save your knees for the interior. Allow 1.5–2 hours. Open daily from 08:00. Purchase tickets on-site or through the official Hellenic Ministry portal.
