Scale the medieval ramparts that ring Piran's dramatic hilltop and ascend the bell tower of St. George's Cathedral for the most breathtaking 360° panorama on the Slovenian Adriatic. A living timeline of Venetian conquest, trade, and architecture spreads below you.
What to expect
The medieval walls wind around Piran's entire perimeter, offering ever-changing vistas over terracotta rooftops, the shimmering Adriatic, and the distant Istrian hinterland. At the summit, St. George's Cathedral (16th century) commands the skyline; its freestanding campanile — modelled on Venice's own — rewards climbers with a jaw-dropping seascape. The cathedral interior shelters a beautiful baptistry and Baroque altarpieces worth lingering over. Allow a full 90 minutes to do the walls and tower justice.
Good to know
The walls are accessed near the top of the old town; follow signs from Tartini Square (15-min walk uphill). The tower can be narrow and steep — not suitable for those with mobility concerns. Check the Portorož–Piran tourist office website for seasonal opening hours. Factor in travel time from Koper port: ~30 min each way.
