Take a short water-taxi to the tranquil bay of Nimborio — Symi's most historically layered cove, fringed by early Christian mosaic floors and Byzantine chapels — for a luxuriously unhurried swim in near-private conditions.
What to expect
The ten-minute water-taxi ride from Gialos curves around the northern headland into a bay of improbable calm, its pebble-and-sand shore backed by a handful of painted boat houses and the ruins of an early Christian basilica with some of the best-preserved mosaic floors in the Dodecanese. Swim in pellucid, unhurried water while the rest of the island's visitors crowd the main harbour. A small taverna serves grilled fish and island salads steps from the water. In the late afternoon the light turns the limestone hills gold — a moment to photograph and remember.
Good to know
Water taxis run regularly from Gialos harbour and can be flagged down for the return journey. The mosaic ruins are unenclosed and freely accessible; a guide adds essential context. Factor in a 20-minute total transit time and aim to return to the main harbour at least 1.5 hours before all-aboard.
