Step into Japan's most legendary bathhouse, Dogo Onsen Honkan, a National Important Cultural Property dating back over 3,000 years. Bathe in the same thermal waters that inspired Hayao Miyazaki's 'Spirited Away' — an utterly unmissable, living piece of Japanese civilization.
What to expect
Enter the towering 1894 Meiji-era wooden building draped in lanterns and steam. Slip into mineral-rich spring waters known to have been enjoyed by imperial family members and literary giants. The upper-floor private rooms with tatami mats, wagashi sweets, and lacquered tea trays transform a bath into a ceremony. The adjacent Annex Asuka wing (currently under renovation phases) offers a contemporary onsen experience when open.
Good to know
Dogo Onsen is a 20-minute tram ride from Matsuyama port via the Iyotetsu Dogo tram line (JPY 180 one way). Tattoos are not permitted in the baths — plan accordingly. Pre-booking a private rest-room session is strongly advised for a guaranteed slot; walk-in communal bathing is also available. Allow 1.5–2 hours. Matsuyama's all-aboard is typically early evening — plenty of time.
