Ascend by ropeway to one of Japan's twelve surviving original castles, perched dramatically atop Mt. Katsuyama. Inside its three-tiered donjon, samurai armour, swords, and 400 years of feudal history await — with panoramic views over the Seto Inland Sea as your reward.
What to expect
The ropeway glides you above cherry-blossom forests (or fiery autumn maples) to the castle's outer gates. Inside the three-storey keep, steep original staircases lead through floors of genuine artefacts — lacquered helmets, matchlock rifles, and painted battle screens. From the top parapet, the city of Matsuyama fans out below with the shimmering Seto Inland Sea beyond. A stroll through the Ninomaru Historical Garden on the descent is a serene finale.
Good to know
The ropeway runs every 8 minutes. A chairlift alternative is also available for JPY 820 round-trip for those who prefer an open-air ride. Engage a Japan Guide Association (JGA) government-licensed private guide for the castle for the richest commentary — book in advance at j-g-a.org. Allow 2–2.5 hours total.
