Stand before Japan's tallest single-drop waterfall (133 m) enshrined as a deity, paired with the vermilion Kumano Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine — a UNESCO World Heritage site of breathtaking spiritual power.
What to expect
Your guide leads you up the stone-lantern-lined approach through ancient cedar forest to the Grand Shrine complex. You'll receive a blessing overview at the main hall before descending to the waterfall viewing terrace, where the roar of 13 million litres per hour is felt as much as heard. The striking Seiganto-ji Buddhist pagoda — one of Japan's most photographed compositions — frames the falls perfectly. Allow time to visit the treasure house and collect a goshuin (red-seal stamp) as a sacred souvenir.
Good to know
Nachi Katsuura is 30–35 minutes by road from Shingu Port. Pre-book a private guide via Kumano Travel to secure morning timing well ahead of all-aboard (typically 17:00–18:00). Wear comfortable shoes — there are around 450 stone steps. The Seiganto-ji pagoda photo spot is free to access.
