Stand inside the vast crater of a 100,000-year-old tuff volcano as the sun ignites the East China Sea below. This UNESCO World Heritage tidal cone is Jeju's single most dramatic natural icon — bucket-list from the first step up.
What to expect
A 30-minute switchback trail leads through subtropical scrub to the rim of the 600 m-wide crater, encircled by 99 jagged basalt columns. Your guide explains the volcanic geology and haenyeo (female free-diver) culture visible in the cove below. On clear mornings the shadows of the crater walls create a painter's palette of colour. The descent passes traditional fishing villages where haenyeo still work the shore.
