Train and dive alongside a Polynesian freediving expert in one of the Pacific's richest, least-dived reefs — the outer wall of Tahanea atoll drops to over 1,000 metres and its sheer fish biomass must be seen to be believed.
What to expect
After a briefing on breathwork and equalization aboard the tender, you slip into the blue alongside your instructor at a site he has selected for the day's current and visibility. On the outer wall, Napoleon wrasse cruise past at eye level and silver clouds of fusiliers part around you. For guests who wish to try traditional Polynesian spearfishing, the guide demonstrates technique and etiquette; any catch is cleaned and served as a fresh sashimi snack on the boat. Sessions are capped at two guests for full personal attention.
Good to know
No freediving certification required; basic swim competency is sufficient. Medical disclosure of any respiratory conditions is mandatory. All equipment — mask, fins, wetsuit — is provided. Book at least two weeks in advance as the specialist's calendar fills quickly around cruise calls.
