Ascend to the legendary Mirador de Selkirk — the very hilltop where Alexander Selkirk, the real Robinson Crusoe, kept his lone vigil scanning the horizon for rescue ships for 4 years and 4 months. A profoundly atmospheric, historically resonant trek unlike anything else in the world.
What to expect
The trail climbs steeply from the village through endemic forest to the bronze plaque marking Selkirk's lookout at 565 metres. Your guide narrates the gripping story of Selkirk's 1704–1709 survival as you ascend. At the summit, 360-degree views of the island and the vast Pacific are utterly humbling. The descent through subtropical forest reveals ancient fern groves and endemic birdlife.
Good to know
This is a moderate-to-strenuous hike — allow 3 hours return and bring water, sun protection, and sturdy shoes. The path is well-marked but steep in sections. Start early to avoid midday heat and to secure time back for the village. Book directly with Crusoe Island Lodge's activities team in advance of your cruise call.
