Step inside the Netherlands' oldest city's finest museum, built over the ruins of Charlemagne's imperial palace. Roman artefacts, Carolingian treasures, and Dutch Golden Age paintings reward the intellectually curious traveller.
What to expect
The museum's archaeology wing houses one of the most significant Roman collections in the Netherlands, including helmets, coins, and glassware excavated right beneath the city. The fine-art galleries display works by Jan van Scorel and other Dutch masters. The building itself is a contemporary architectural statement cantilevered above the ancient park. After your visit, walk the Valkhof Park to find the hauntingly beautiful remains of the Sint-Nicolaaskapel, an 11th-century imperial chapel.
Good to know
The museum is a 10-minute walk from most river-cruise moorings along the Waal. No pre-booking required for general entry, but check for temporary exhibition tickets online. Allow 90 minutes minimum. The park is a superb spot for a private picnic if you pre-arrange a gourmet hamper through your ship's concierge.
