Board a lovingly restored 19th-century steam tram and chug through the Noord-Holland polderscape from Hoorn to the medieval harbour town of Medemblik — one of the most atmospheric rail journeys in the Netherlands.
What to expect
The 20-kilometre journey rattles through flat green polders, past windmills and grazing cows, with the Zuiderzee shimmering to the east. Medemblik is a perfectly preserved small harbour town with the 13th-century Radboud Castle worth a quick visit before your return tram. The round trip takes approximately 2.5–3 hours including time in Medemblik. Steam-hauled carriages are original period stock, beautifully maintained.
Good to know
The tram station is a 10-minute walk from the cruise pier. Departures run seasonally (April–October); check the timetable online and pre-book return tickets as peak departures sell out. Allow 3.5 hours total from pier.
