Mausoleum of Halicarnassus: Private Archaeological Deep-Dive

Stand on the foundations of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World — the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus — guided by a specialist archaeologist who reveals what few visitors ever discover. A rare encounter with antiquity at its most monumental.

What to expect

Built in 350 BC for the Persian satrap Mausolus, this tomb was so magnificent it gave the world the word 'mausoleum.' Your expert guide walks you through the excavation site, explaining how the four greatest sculptors of antiquity decorated its friezes — fragments of which are displayed in situ. The guide uses detailed reconstruction imagery to help you visualise the 45-metre pyramid-topped tomb in its full glory. The site is a 10-minute walk or short taxi ride from the pier, making it perfectly manageable as a standalone morning excursion.

Good to know

Combine with the Castle and Museum for a full ancient-history day ashore. The site is compact but intellectually rich — allow 1.5 hours. Wear comfortable shoes and a sun hat; there is little shade on site.
