Journey to Abydos — considered the holiest city in ancient Egypt and the burial place of Osiris himself — to explore Seti I's extraordinary temple, home to the finest painted reliefs in the Nile Valley and the enigmatic Abydos King List.
What to expect
Depart Qena by private vehicle for the 90-minute drive north to Abydos. Your Egyptologist leads you through seven chapels dedicated to the royal ancestors, each retaining breathtaking original paintwork in blues, greens, and ochres almost 3,300 years old. The famous Abydos King List — a carved record of 76 pharaohs — is a highlight, as is the Osireion: a mysterious sunken granite cenotaph believed to mark the tomb of Osiris. The site is uncrowded and deeply atmospheric.
