Spend a half-day inside living Garifuna culture — learning the pounding rhythms of the paranda drum, joining a call-and-response dance circle, and sitting down to a feast of tapado cooked by local women. Rare, joyful, and completely authentic.
What to expect
Your guide drives you to a Garifuna neighborhood where a master drummer opens his home and his repertoire. He traces the African-Caribbean roots of the paranda and punta rhythms before placing the drum in your hands and coaching you through the beat. The session flows into a dance circle that genuinely gets everyone moving and laughing. Afterward, the family matriarch demonstrates how tapado — a rich coconut-milk broth with fresh catch, plantain, and yuca — is prepared over a wood fire, and you eat together at a long communal table.
