Explore the dramatic clifftop ruins of Virgin Gorda's 19th-century copper mine — operated by Cornish miners for the Spanish Crown — perched above crashing Atlantic surf at the island's wild southern tip.
What to expect
The road to Copper Mine Point winds through scrubby cactus hillside before the Atlantic suddenly opens up below you, waves detonating against volcanic rock. The ruined 1838 engine house, stone chimney stack, and mine shaft remain hauntingly intact against the cobalt sea — among the best-preserved industrial ruins in the entire Caribbean. Your guide narrates both the colonial mining history and the island's broader Arawak and colonial past. Spend 45 minutes here before rolling back through the valley to the Valley village for a cold local beer at a waterfront bar.
Good to know
The site involves some uneven rocky terrain; comfortable flat shoes recommended. Best visited in the morning before heat peaks. Easily combined with The Baths and Gorda Peak into a full private island tour with Stoutt's.
