Paddle out into a pitch-black North Sound bay on a moonless night and watch the water explode in electric-blue sparks with every stroke, as millions of dinoflagellates light up around your kayak and trailing fingertips. It is one of only a handful of consistently bioluminescent bays on Earth and feels genuinely otherworldly. Cayman Kayaks pioneered the tour in 2007 and remains the original, conservation-minded operator.
What to expect
Tours launch from Rum Point on the north side, about a 45-minute drive from George Town, and run only on the darkest nights around the new moon. Guides give a short safety briefing, then lead you in tandem kayaks (or the electric boat) into the bay where you switch off all lights. The glow is strongest with hands and paddles disturbing the water; the experience is calm and suitable for beginners. Wear quick-dry clothing and expect to get a little wet.
Cruise lines rarely offer this because it only runs on the darkest nights and after dark; it's a fit for overnight calls or late departures only. There is essentially no equivalent ship tour, so booking direct with the originator is the move when your itinerary allows it.
Good to know
Dates are dictated by the moon cycle and sell out, so pre-book online well ahead and verify a night falls during your call. This is realistically only doable on an overnight or very late departure given the north-side drive time; arrange private transport, as taxis are scarce after dark. No flashlights or phone lights in the bay (they ruin the effect).
