Step into an authentic 1898 trail camp at the edge of the wilderness, pan for real gold alongside a seasoned prospector, meet an Alaskan sled dog team, and sit down to a campfire salmon feast beneath the spruce canopy.
What to expect
A short shuttle ride from the pier delivers you to a clearing where canvas tents and log structures recreate the stampeders' overnight camps. A veteran prospector teaches panning technique in a cold, gin-clear creek — and you keep whatever gold you find. The howling, tail-wagging sled dogs steal the show as mushers explain the Iditarod and demonstrate harness commands. A campfire lunch of wild-caught sockeye salmon, sourdough biscuits, and blueberry cobbler caps the experience beautifully.
Good to know
Wear waterproof footwear — creekside gold panning gets muddy. The site is a 10-minute shuttle from the pier; shuttles run continuously throughout the port call. The experience runs 2–3 hours, leaving ample time to explore Skagway's historic district before all-aboard.
