Step inside the North Pacific Cannery — Canada's oldest surviving salmon cannery and a National Historic Site — for an immersive guided tour of the entire preserved village that once defined BC's fishing culture. Utterly unique; nothing else like it on the Alaska Inside Passage.
What to expect
Located on the Skeena River at Port Edward (15 min from Prince Rupert), the cannery sits on stilts above the tidal flats in an extraordinarily evocative setting. Your guide walks you through the entire operation — from the net loft to the mechanised canning line — and reveals the layered stories of the Japanese, Chinese, First Nations, and European workers who lived and laboured here. Artefacts, original machinery, and perfectly preserved buildings create an almost cinematic atmosphere. Allow time to linger; the riverside boardwalk and bald eagles overhead are bonus highlights.
