Hoonah, the largest Tlingit village in Alaska and gateway to Icy Strait Point, holds living traditions stretching back millennia. A private guided cultural walk connects you with master carvers, clan house storytellers, and the Huna Tlingit's profound relationship with the very waters you've just sailed.
What to expect
Your Tlingit guide leads you through the historic Hoonah Packing Company cannery, now a beautifully restored cultural hub, into the totem park where recent and ancestral poles tell clan histories. You enter the community clan house for drumming, oratory, and regalia display — a living ceremony, not a staged show. Artisan demonstrations of formline design and cedar weaving are often included. Allow 2–2.5 hours.
Good to know
Icy Strait Point is the closest major port to the Inian Islands (approx. 30 min by water taxi or ship tender). Private guide upgrades cost approximately USD 50 additional pp and must be requested directly via the operator website. The site is walkable from the dock — no transport needed.
