Southeast Alaska's Chichagof Island hosts one of the highest densities of brown bears per square mile on the planet. A float-plane transfer from the Inian Islands/Gustavus area delivers you to a remote estuary where bears fish, forage, and interact with minimal human disturbance — a scene from a nature documentary made real.
What to expect
A de Havilland Beaver or Otter float-plane lifts off from calm water and arcs over spruce-blanketed islands, touching down on a glassy estuary or lake. A permitted wildlife guide then leads your tiny group on foot to elevated viewing platforms or gravel bars where brown bears congregate to feed on salmon or sedge grass. Photography distances are managed for safety and for the extraordinary close-up images this affords. Total experience: 4–5 hours.
Good to know
Weather-dependent — operators reschedule with 24-hour notice; have a fallback afternoon planned. Book 60–90 days ahead for July–August. The Inian Islands area float-base is near Elfin Cove; confirm pick-up point with your operator. Sturdy waterproof hiking boots and a telephoto lens (200mm+) are strongly recommended.
