Follow the elevated boardwalk through Gator Gardens, Alert Bay's remarkable freshwater bog and old-growth forest reserve — a hauntingly beautiful tangle of carnivorous plants, ancient Sitka spruce, and mirrored black water that feels genuinely prehistoric. One of the most unusual natural walks on the BC coast.
What to expect
The elevated wooden boardwalk loops through a dense, moss-draped bog forest draped in silence — a world apart from the rest of the island. Sundew carnivorous plants, yellow skunk cabbage, and bog laurel grow in profusion at the water's edge. Ancient Sitka spruce and red cedar rise overhead, their roots buttressed above the saturated peat. Bald eagles and great blue herons are frequently spotted. The full loop takes 45–60 minutes at a comfortable pace and requires no particular fitness level.
Good to know
A 10–15 minute walk from the dock, well signposted through the village. Wear closed, grippy footwear — the boardwalk can be slippery when wet. Best in morning light for photography. Combine seamlessly with the nearby Totem Pole Park to make excellent use of your time ashore. No booking required.
