Stand at the face of a 13-mile river of ancient ice, watch icebergs calve into the glacial lake, and hike to thundering Nugget Falls — all with an expert naturalist guide who frames every shot and explains every layer of glacial science.
What to expect
You're transported from the Juneau waterfront to the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area, where your naturalist leads the group along lakeside trails with the glacier's towering blue face ahead. Seals often haul out on the floating icebergs, and black bears are regularly spotted on the lateral moraines in summer. The hike to Nugget Falls rewards with a close-up of one of Alaska's most dramatic waterfalls plunging directly into the glacial lake. Your guide contextualizes the glacier's century-long retreat with scientific precision and genuine passion.
Good to know
Round-trip transport from the Juneau cruise pier is included. The full excursion runs approximately 3–3.5 hours. Book early — small-group availability is limited. Wear waterproof footwear and bring a rain shell; the trail can be wet and the glacier produces its own cool breeze.
