Yakutat is Alaska's legendary surf town — consistent, uncrowded waves breaking against a backdrop of glaciers and old-growth forest. Surf a genuine wilderness point break in one of the most spectacular settings on Earth.
What to expect
Your certified surf guide — a local Yakutat resident who has surfed these waters year-round — fits you with a thick wetsuit and leads a land-based lesson before walking you to one of the bay-area beach breaks. The session typically runs 90 minutes in the water, with instruction adjusted for all skill levels from beginner to intermediate. Between sets, you'll notice the glaciated peaks of the St. Elias Range rising directly behind the breaking waves — an image that stays with you forever.
Good to know
Full 5mm wetsuits, boots, and gloves are provided — water temperatures hover around 8–12°C year-round. No prior surfing experience required. This is a physically active excursion; a basic level of fitness is recommended. Book directly with Icy Waves well in advance as local guide availability is limited during the cruise season.
