Stand on the crater rim of one of Earth's most active volcanoes at dusk, watching molten lava explode into a violet sky. A certified Vulcanological Guide leads a small private group to the 920m summit — a once-in-a-lifetime volcanic encounter.
What to expect
The 5–7 hour afternoon-to-night hike begins in the village and climbs through volcanic scree and hardened lava fields as the sun descends. At the crater rim, Strombolian explosions blast incandescent lava into the darkening sky every 15–20 minutes on average. Your expert guide explains each eruption cycle in real time. The descent by torchlight, with the glowing Sciara del Fuoco cascading below, is otherworldly.
Good to know
Pre-booking is mandatory; helmets and hi-vis vests are required and provided. Summit hikes are only permitted with licensed guides. Allow 7 hours total — check your ship's all-aboard time carefully as this is a late-evening experience. Wear sturdy ankle-support boots and carry a warm layer; the summit temperature drops sharply after dark.
