Thunder across the moon-like lava fields of active Pacaya Volcano on a private ATV — one of the most adrenaline-charged, visually surreal experiences in all of Central America. Bucket-list adventure at an active volcano, no hiking required.
What to expect
After a scenic transfer to the base of Pacaya, you're briefed and helmeted before mounting your ATV for a guided assault of the volcano's flanks. The terrain shifts from pine forest to surreal black lava moonscape as you climb — steam vents hiss beside the track and the smell of sulphur sharpens the air. At the summit viewpoint, the panorama stretches across the Pacific lowlands and neighbouring volcanoes. Your guide narrates the geology and Mayan cultural significance of the volcano throughout, making this as educational as it is viscerally thrilling.
Good to know
Pacaya is approximately 1 hour from the port, making it very manageable within a port-day window. No prior ATV experience is necessary. Closed-toe shoes and long trousers are recommended. Book in advance — ATV slots are limited and this is one of the port's most popular experiences. Check volcanic activity status on the morning of your visit.
