Step inside Acapulco's 17th-century harbour fortress — the keystone of Spain's Pacific trade empire — and discover the jaw-dropping Diego Rivera mural hidden within the city's Alameda park, guided by an expert local historian on a fully private itinerary.
What to expect
Your guide meets you dockside and leads you through the star-shaped ramparts of Fort San Diego, now housing the Museo Histórico de Acapulco. Inside, exquisite dioramas and original galleon artefacts bring the 250-year Manila trade route to life. After the fort, you walk the shaded Alameda to discover Rivera's monumental 1956 mural depicting Acapulco's pre-Hispanic and colonial history — one of the artist's last major works, rarely discussed in mainstream guides. The tour concludes at the Mercado Central for a curated mezcal tasting.
Good to know
Fort San Diego opens at 09:00 Tuesday–Sunday (closed Monday); admission is approximately MXN 90 per person. The full private tour runs 3–3.5 hours. Walking surfaces are uneven — wear comfortable closed shoes. The Mercado mezcal stop adds ~45 minutes and is worth every minute.
