Conquer the highest active volcano in El Salvador and peer into a turquoise acid-lake crater that feels like another planet. The summit ridge delivers panoramic views of three volcanoes, two crater lakes and the Pacific — a true once-in-a-lifetime Salvadoran highlight.
What to expect
Drive from Acajutla into the cool highlands of Cerro Verde National Park, where cloud forest gives way to otherworldly volcanic scrub. The 3-hour round hike ascends 2,381 metres through shifting micro-climates; your guide interprets the geology, flora and indigenous legends of Ilamatepec along the way. At the crater rim, the vivid turquoise lake — its colour the result of dissolved sulphur minerals — is jaw-dropping. On clear days, nearby Izalco (the 'Lighthouse of the Pacific') and Lake Coatepeque shimmer below.
Good to know
This is a moderate-to-strenuous hike (3–4 hrs round trip on the mountain); overall excursion is 7–8 hrs. Best for fit travellers comfortable on uneven volcanic terrain. Park entry required (approx. USD 3); national park rangers must accompany all groups. Depart by 07:00 from port to be safe for all-aboard. Bring layers — the summit can be 10°C cooler than the coast.
