Slip beneath the surface of the Pacific at Los Cóbanos, home to El Salvador's sole living coral reef and protected marine reserve. Hawksbill sea turtles, moray eels, parrotfish and technicolour corals await — a snorkelling experience almost no visitor to the country ever has.
What to expect
Los Cóbanos is just 20 minutes north of Acajutla — a beautifully convenient escape. Your private panga (motorboat) motors out over crystalline Pacific waters to the reef's most biodiverse zones, including volcanic rock formations draped in sea fans and brain coral. The shallows are calm and ideal for all skill levels; your guide is in the water with you throughout. After snorkelling, dry off on the boat with cold drinks and fresh fruit while your captain cruises the dramatic rocky coastline back to shore.
Good to know
Los Cóbanos is a protected marine reserve; all visitors must snorkel with a registered guide. Reef conditions are best in the morning — ideally in the water by 09:00. Total excursion is 3–4 hrs, very manageable for all-aboard. Bring reef-safe sunscreen (required in the marine reserve) and a rash guard. Best marine visibility Dec–Apr.
