Dugout canoe up the Chagres River into Soberanía jungle to visit an authentic Emberá village. This is the Panama that existed long before the canal — a living culture of handwoven baskets, plant medicine, and extraordinary craftsmanship.
What to expect
A 4x4 transfer brings you to the Chagres riverbank where carved dugout canoes wait. The 30-minute upriver journey passes kingfishers, herons, and the occasional caiman before the village appears on the bank, adorned with hand-painted faces and traditional dress. Village elders demonstrate the use of jungle plants for medicine and dye; artisans create intricate tagua-nut carvings and woven baskets you can purchase direct. A lunch of fresh fish, plantain, and heart-of-palm is served communally in the open-air meeting house. The return journey at golden hour is quietly magical.
Good to know
Transfer to the Chagres trailhead is approx. 45–60 minutes from Fuerte Amador. Wear quick-dry clothing and waterproof sandals; bring sunscreen and a small daypack. The full experience runs 5–6 hours — verify your ship's all-aboard time and book with buffer. Confirm availability directly with the village operator.
