Ascend Kyoto's most iconic mountain shrine through a seemingly endless corridor of vermillion torii gates — at dawn or dusk, with a private guide, before the crowds arrive. This is the single most photographed — and most misunderstood — site in Japan.
What to expect
Your guide meets you at Maizuru port and transfers you directly to Fushimi Inari-taisha (approx. 1.5 hrs). You begin at the famous Senbon Torii lower gates, then continue up through the lesser-visited upper mountain trails, where the air is cedar-scented and the lanterns glow. Your guide narrates the living Shinto traditions of the fox god Inari — patron of merchants and rice — bringing the mythology alive. The return journey can be tailored to include a kaiseki lunch in Kyoto's Fushimi neighbourhood.
Good to know
The shrine is always open and free to enter; the private guide and transport are what you book. Pre-book well in advance for cruise days. All-aboard time is typically 5–6 pm; a full-day private tour (8 hrs) is comfortably achievable. Wear comfortable walking shoes — the full summit hike is about 4 km round-trip.
